Earlier this month I was able to sit down with Brett Geib, you might know him as the picture frame guy. When it comes to these conversations I pretty much always start with the same question, Tell me about yourself? After that it’s pretty much just winging it. When I asked Brett this question he told me that he has “been in Gainesville since he was 13, is a picture framer, and a musician, and that's the short of it”.
While that might be the short of it, there is absolutely more to Brett than those three things. One of those things was during our conversation I found out that he was pretty much leaving work, picking up some supplies and heading over to @the.ox.gnv to set up a hotdog stand in support of raising money for Palestinian families with his partner Al.
I asked him about opening up their own business because I know I would love to open a photography business but honestly couldn’t imagine leaving my work for it. He told me that when Suzanne and himself opened up their business, Gainesville Picture Framers, it was a pretty big step outside their comfort zone. They left their old place that they were working at after a while. There was talk about possibly buying it out but after that fell through it was time for them to step out and do their own thing.
The quote of the conversation had to be “that's the secret sauce of life, you know, experiment.” This quote came about after talking about photography and synthesizers. I was telling him getting this large format camera was my mini-mid life crisis. When looking at any professional talking about getting good at photography it's always stick with one camera, one lens, one film, one developer, ect. I kind of just threw that out the window. I am always trying a new film, a new camera, a developer, something.
Leaving the shop I have to say Brett and Suzanne are awesome people and I am glad I got to know them a bit better.
