This will be my first conversation with Andrew, whom most of you know as Andrew Chadwick Archives. Hell, that's how I knew him. I know him a bit better now. When reaching out, I didn’t have too clear of a plan. Typically, when I reach out to people, I ask when and where they would like to meet up because I feel like they are doing me a favor. So far a lot of my conversations have been at Loosy’s or downtown. Andrew on the other hand invited me to his house and we had a nice stroll to his local park.
Now he did share some numbers with me, and this is impressive. Last time he counted he had over 7000 videos of full sets online, every 10 minutes of video takes approx an hour to render. If I haven’t said it before, this man puts in work. He does this all for free. He does have a Patreon, but none of his channels are monetized.
I feel like I need to also include someone else we met on the walk back. A well-known local legend, the trail cat who will remain nameless for his own protection. The tale says that some college students once tried to "adopt" him. However, once at their apartment, the cat freaked out and tore the place up. The students decided to return him to the trail, but the cat had other plans; he proceeded to defecate all over their car as a final act of defiance. This tale may not be about Andrew, but it's a memorable story he shared that adds to the unique character of Gainesville.
We have a lot of Florida and Gainesville natives here. Andrew's path to Gainesville was a bit longer. At nine years old Andrew's parents bought a 28 foot sailboat hull, not boat, just the fiberglass hull. From their home in Michigan, they built it out and traveled north into Canada, then south along the eastern coastline of the US all the way to the Bahamas. Eventually settling in Florida.
Once in Florida eventually, Andrew grew up. After this growing-up period, he started a Record Label called Boxcar Records. Since being in Gainesville Andrew has not been idle. He does his own experimental noise under the name “Ironing”, a wind chime project called heirloom, he is part of a duo called LOL DETH, free improv shows, and a series of experimental noise shows called Action Research. All of that, on top of recording local shows.
He was kind enough to tell me more about the documentation he does. This is a topic that I find near to my heart. I love photography, I truly do. Speaking in broad terms here, I feel like there is a seesaw that you balance on as a photographer; you either lean towards the artistic side or the documentary side. I personally feel like I lean heavily towards the documentary side. This project is an extension of that. So when I started shooting shows and started noticing this tall bald man at all the shows I was at, steadfast with his camcorder, I was intrigued. He is such a Gainsville music scene staple that I once heard someone say that you haven’t made it till Andrew comes to one of your shows.
